This is the more calm and charming district
of Venice. It is the least populated and is full of old palaces
and churches. In this district there are 2 of the most important
museums of the city: the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy
Guggenheim Museum.
The Gallerie dell'Academia is home to one of the finest art
collections in Europe, chronicling the development of Venetian
art from the 1300s to the 1700s. The Peggy Guggenheim collection
is housed in the former Palazzo of the wealthy American heiress
and has become one of the most illustrious collections of
modern art in Italy. It spans the artistic movements of cubism,
european abstraction and surrealism with notable works by
Brancusi, Marino Marini, Kandinsky, Picasso, Magritte, Rothko,
Max Ernst, Dali and Jackson Pollock.
