The sestiere of Castello is one of the most
popular and populated districts in the city and it is the
largest. It extends itself from north with the island of St.
Pietro di Castello where is located the homonym Basilica,
up to the edges of St Mark Square.
Important attractions in Castello are the Arsenale, the largest
naval complex in Europe in the 13th Century, and the monasteries
in the north of the quarter. The Venice Arsenale were built
around 1104 and was then extended over three centuries, to
a point where they took up a large area of Castello. The Arsenale
is composed by a set of buildings from where the Venetian
war and merchant fleets set off.
Other attractions are: the Biennale Gardens, the Church of
Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Church of San Giorgio dei Greci,
the Church de la Pietà and the Scuola di San Giorgio
degli Schiavoni and the Scuola di San Marco.
